A Las Vegas performer named\u00a0Maren Wade<\/strong>\u00a0filed a lawsuit against\u00a0Taylo r Swift<\/strong>, as well as related business parties, on March 30 for copyright infringement, according to a\u00a0lawsuit\u00a0obtained by E! News. In the files, Wade alleges that the title of Swift\u2019s latest album,\u00a0The Life of a Showgirl<\/em>, is too similar to\u00a0Confessions of a Showgirl<\/em>, the title of a column Wade says she started in 2014 which has since evolved into a podcast and live show.<\/p>\n

Wade\u2014who previously celebrated the release of Swift’s\u00a0The Life of a Showgirl<\/em>\u00a0online\u2014also states in the lawsuit that she registered the name\u00a0Confessions of a Showgirl<\/em>\u00a0with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) in 2015 for entertainment services.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter years of continuous use, the mark achieved incontestable status,\u201d the lawsuit reads, \u201ca statutory recognition of the goodwill Plaintiff earned through her sustained, personal effort.<\/p>\n

But upon the release of The Life of a Showgirl<\/em>\u00a0in Oct. 2025, according to the lawsuit, \u201cthe designation was affixed to consumer goods, stamped onto labels, tags, and packaging, and deployed as a source identifier across retail channels\u2014all directed at the same audience Plaintiff had spent years cultivating.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n

Wade\u2019s lawsuit says the two names share the same structure, dominant phrase and \u201coverall commercial impression,\u201d and that they\u2019re directed at the same pool of consumers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n

Additionally, the lawsuit alleges that when Swift and her team attempted to trademark the album\u2019s name, the USPTO \u201crefused on the ground that Defendants\u2019 designation is confusingly similar to Plaintiff\u2019s established mark. Defendants were therefore placed on actual notice that their chosen designation was likely to be confused with a mark that already belonged to someone else.\u201d<\/p>\n

E! News reached out to Taylor\u2019s rep but did not receive comment.<\/p>\n

Wade\u2019s lawsuit names the following counts: trademark infringement, false designation of origin and unfair competition.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n
